As part of its commitment to protect the environment, WRPS has established an Environmental Management System, or EMS. An EMS provides mechanisms for responding to changing environmental conditions and requirements, reporting on environmental performance, and reinforcing continuous improvement.
WRPS conforms to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14001) EMS principles. This approach ensures environmental impacts are systematically identified, controlled, and monitored. Significant impacts and aspects associated with day-to-day work activities and operations are evaluated. The WRPS EMS is designed to improve environmental performance, provide compliance with legal regulations, improve efficiency and effectiveness, reduce costs, and earn and retain regulator and community trust.
The scope of the ISO 14001 EMS includes those operations managed by WRPS through its contract with the Department of Energy, Office of River Protection at or near the Hanford Site in Richland Washington and applies to all persons doing work under its control.
